im trying to fix my troybilt chipper, heres the problem, i froze a bearing, i shut it down in time and all seems well with the shaft which is the main shaft of the chipper unit, now this chipper is not a stand alone chipper it is the unit which bolts onto the pto of the red power horse tiller, it does a good job for its size but, i cant find a proper listing for this machine. we got a new bearing by measuring the id and od of the old bearing, then pressing it into the bearing retainer which bolts onto the rear of the machine, the bearing wont go on the shaft, but it is real close and before i ruin the whole machine i need to know if this is supposed to be a press fit on the shaft or just a slip fit on the shaft does anybody know?

a little more info in case it helps, the chipper itself is model number 47026, which attaches to the troybilt red power horse tiller model number 12153. ive been all over troybilt websites and while they do recognize the number for the tiller, they dont recognize the chipper, i know they have been partially or more bought out and the old model numbers may not work, i bought this about 2 years ago, at that time the tiller had actually been used 5 times and the chipper had never even been mounted,so its all almost new condition, any help here would be appreciated thanks

like Tom just said, you need to clean your shaft of rust or any scoring and get somebody to measure it and the bearing with a micrometer. Some bearings are supplied to slip fit a particular dimension shaft, others are specified as press fit.

First of all, Troy-Built is owned by MTD and has been for a number of years.

While I do not have direct experience with your chipper, it makes no sense to me for that bearing to be pressed onto the shaft. Yes, it should be a snug fit to make sure that the spinning is done by the bearing race and not the shaft inside the inner bearing race. So.. I am thinking that the shaft needs to be polished smooth because it does not take much to cause a snug fitting bearing to refuse to slide on. We are talking about clearances in the thousands of an inch. It is also possible that you either have the wrong bearing or a defective bearing. A good quality micrometer is needed to make sure that the shaft is completely round and that the inner bearing bore is likewise round.

You could also contact MTD directly and ask if there is a Service Manual for that chipper. It may shed some light on the issue.

The bearing should slide on your shaft with minimal effort, the thing that actually locks it to the shaft is the collar itself with the set screw.
Sounds like you either have rust or paint on the shaft or you bought the wrong bearing.
