Nov 12, 2014 Page 1 of 6 - building a repeater out of two Kenwood TK-880 - posted in Technical Discussion: Hello everyone! Im looking to integrate a Kenwood TK-880-1 ver2 with a repeater controller. Im about to pull the trigger on a pair or 880s and just wanted to do a bit more research before i do. On some other models like TK-805D, there is a way to open it up and solder some connections for the rx tx.

So far I've ordered 2 of these radios from this seller. He has been extremely helpful with these radios. To make these radios work you will need to order a programming cable, however, he does have the software required to change the programming of the radio. I chose to flash the radio back to the latest Kenwood firmware. The radio is able to be programmed down to the 440Mhz range (70cm HAM) along with GMRS and of course UHF Commercial frequencies (which was the radio's intent). Using a roof top mag mount Antenna, I've been able to talk from Vehicle to Vehicle up to 10 miles away (Simplex on flat ground non-obstructed (I was on the highway at the time)). They can very easily go much further the higher up you are. However, if the radio is used to its full potential using a Ham Repeater or Commercial LTR Repeater you can easily stretch 100 miles or more depending on the repeater height and configuration. These radios do support Fleetsync Enhanced Protocol and allow for unit to unit calling and Radio (Caller) ID Support. The radio also has scan support and this works with LTR and conventional channels. Remote Honk Alert with confirmation tone, Remote disable/enable TX, and Radio disable/enable with confirmation tone. All from using DTMF signaling from a remote station. You can also link them to a computer and send short messages to a remote radio over Fleetsync or a pre-defined message using the buttons on the front panel to a specific station or all stations (All Call). They also support PA (Public Announcement) but require a special plug (KCT-19) and Voice Inversion Scrambling support which also requires an option board to be installed. The face plate is reversible allowing the speaker to be on the top or bottom of the radio (depending on installation option). The radio also supports CTCSS and DCS Signalling which is using a lot on Ham 70cm and good in preventing other conversations that are on the same channel but not directed to your radios from being herd (filtered out). This is also good for attempted to contact repeaters that require a CTCSS Tone or DCS Tone to activate the repeater.Programming the radio and understanding the software may take a little time but overall its pretty easy to understand. There are a lot of options with these radios, the manuals and circuit diagram information is easily found on google. I have the firmware and so does half the users on the Yahoo Kenwood Forums. However, the radio can be easily programmed using the software from hotfire on the SJI Firmware if you don't want to go through flashing the factory firmware. To flash the factory firmware, use the SJI firmware to download the mod-plug from the radio, check off under 'Enable Modes' (Flash). Upload the mod-plug back to the radio. Once that is done turn the radio off. When you turn it on hold down the SCN (Scan) button while turning it on. It will say PROG 57600. From here use the Flash program that comes with the Kenwood Software to upload the factory firmware. After that the SJI Software will be useless. Use the kenwood software from that point forward to change the radio settings. I hope this helps everyone who has questions about these radios.Read full review
