Sep 13, 2011 Copying saved programs from Sky box to play on a laptop? 13th Sep 11 at 4:49 PM #1; I want to copy saved programs off my Sky box and play them on a laptop. On other forum go to the extent of taking the actual hard drive out of the box and planting it into a normal desktop PC, all to no avail without the Sky box and the.

What is the best or easiest way of getting recordings from my Sky+ HD box on to my PC? I did a google search and someone mentioned using an Archos device to transfer the programmes to that device first and then transferring to computer by USB. This interested me a lot because it sounds really easy. But the Archos device mentioned is very old. I wonder, is there a newer Archos (or similar) device that would do the same job? What other alternatives are there? The majority of recordings I make aren't in HD, but a few are.

If you want to transfer them to a PC to try and watch them then don't bother it will not work.
However if you just want to fit a larger hard drive in your Sky box there is a software programme that will transfer all your recordings via a PC to the new drive. I used it once and it works well. It involves removing the hard drive from the Sky box, there is no easy way i'm afraid.

There is no way to transfer encrypted (subscription) recordings to a PC in order to play them their (or transfer to DVD etc). There is software available (ExPVR) which will enaable viewing of non-encrypted content. The only way to extract encrypted recordings is to play them on the Sky box and record them (in real time) on the PC using a video capture device and software. You can only record HD content from the Sky box using a HDMI to component converter (such as HD Fury) and a component video capture device to remove the copy protection. RGB and composite video outputs are not protected and can be recorded using appropriate devices and software.

Using a Hauppauge HDPVR2 with a particular HDMI splitter from Amazon will allow you to capture all live and recorded programmes in digital HD to your PC. The HDMI splitter strips the HDCP from the signal.

I've heard of this. What HDMI splitter do I need if I go down this route?

Apart from costing more money & eating up your disc space it will take forever to do it that way. May i ask why you want your recordings on your PC? It seems a bit pointless to me.

The best way is using a Hauppauge Rocket with a splitter that removes the protection. You can record to USB or straight to the computer.

I believe this one will work

I believe the Hauppauge Rocket won't allow to record DD5.1.

I suppose he/she might want to -
a) keep some special recordings; or
b) free up some disc space on sky box; or
c) store them on a hard drive to connect to a tv in another room. or
d) do whatever they want.
It won't take forever to do but of course it can only be done in real time. So set to record and go and do something else.

It's probably just that his PC is a laptop and he wants to be able to watch recordings away from home or when on a train journey say.

Sky Go is only for live viewing when you have an internet connection. Sky Go Extra will allow you to record/download and playback without an internet connection but is only for catch up, on demand, box sets and movies - it will not allow recording of live content.

The Archos devices will allow recording of all content - but only for playback on the device itself. They are quite old now, but the quality was ok.
